Luxury fashion house Prada is elevating its presence in China by introducing its first standalone restaurant in Asia. Named Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai, the new dining destination is a collaboration with acclaimed Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai and is set to open in the historic Rong Zhai mansion in Shanghai.

A Fusion of Fashion, Film, and Fine Dining

Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai, inspired by the phrase “mi shang” (meaning “to be obsessed with”), aims to offer an immersive experience that blends cinematic aesthetics with culinary artistry. Wong Kar-wai, known for his visually striking films such as In the Mood for Love and Happy Together, has lent his signature style to the restaurant’s design. Mirrored surfaces, intricate lighting, and bold contrasts create a dreamlike atmosphere reminiscent of his iconic storytelling.

The restaurant’s concept is also influenced by the tête-bêche motif, a philatelic design where two stamps appear in reversed orientations. This symbolic element represents a cultural connection between Milan and Shanghai, mirroring Prada’s Italian roots and China’s rich heritage.

A Historic Setting Reimagined

Located within the Rong Zhai mansion, a beautifully restored 1918 residence that Prada has utilized as a cultural venue since 2017, the restaurant seamlessly merges history with modern luxury. The blend of Chinese and Italian influences is reflected not only in the architecture but also in the menu, offering a sophisticated dining experience.

Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai will provide an all-day dining experience, featuring a curated menu that harmonizes Italian flavors with Chinese inspirations. Guests can indulge in breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and evening cocktails, with each dish reflecting a fusion of Prada’s elegance and gastronomic innovation.
