Ferrari 296 Speciale: A Sharper, Lighter Hybrid Powerhouse Redefining the Berlinetta

Ferrari has pulled the covers off its latest engineering marvel: the 296 Speciale—a leaner, more potent iteration of the 296 GTB that pushes the boundaries of performance and hybrid technology. Dubbed the most thrilling berlinetta currently in the marque’s production lineup, the 296 Speciale is purpose-built for drivers seeking a visceral connection to speed, agility, and innovation.

At its core, the 296 Speciale harnesses a finely tuned hybrid V6 powertrain that delivers a formidable 880 cv (868 hp)—an increase of 50 cv over the standard GTB. This bump in power stems from a reworked combustion engine and an upgraded electric motor enhanced with a new “extra boost” function. The V6 alone produces 700 cv (690 hp), while the electric motor contributes an additional 180 cv, making the Speciale a true force on both road and track.

Drawing from Ferrari’s motorsport expertise, the Speciale features a number of race-bred enhancements. These include titanium connecting rods, a lightened crankshaft, and an F1-style knock control system for optimized performance and durability. The 8-speed dual-clutch transmission has also been refined to deliver faster, more seamless gear changes, especially when paired with the synchronized power from the electric motor.

Aerodynamics play a key role in the Speciale’s elevated performance. At 155 mph, the car produces 959 lbs of downforce—a 20% increase over the 296 GTB. This is achieved through innovations such as sculpted side wings, a centrally mounted aero damper, and a recalibrated active rear spoiler that introduces a new Medium Downforce (MD) mode.

The car’s footprint has also undergone significant transformation. Thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber and titanium, the 296 Speciale is 132 lbs lighter than its predecessor, improving not only acceleration and handling, but also braking performance and overall dynamics. A lowered ride height further enhances grip and stability, delivering a more planted, track-ready feel.

Step inside, and the cabin echoes Ferrari’s racing DNA. Carbon fiber door panels, a streamlined central console, and Alcantara upholstery create a focused, minimalist atmosphere. Visually, the car makes a bold statement with a newly introduced Verde Nürburgring exterior paint, complemented by optional racing stripes and numbered decals that hint at its motorsport lineage.

While Ferrari has yet to release final pricing and availability details, the 296 Speciale is poised to become a coveted addition for collectors and driving enthusiasts alike. More than just an upgrade, the Speciale is a declaration of Ferrari’s hybrid future—one where cutting-edge technology and pure driving emotion go hand in hand.
